How a Dispensary Makes Money

Where the store's revenue comes from

A dispensary sells a repeat product to people who choose the store on price, selection, product knowledge and convenience. A new customer's value depends on whether they come back, so it is measured over the months they keep visiting, not by the first basket.

The store's economics are tight. Product cost, shrink, the cost of staff who know the menu and the tax and fee structure all sit between a sale and what the owner keeps. Marketing has to be judged against that margin, not against the number of visits a campaign produced.

Dispensary Marketing Pain Points

Where the spend goes untraced

Many dispensary owners spend on channels they cannot connect to a sale. A budget goes to a promotion, a directory or a platform that reports clicks, and the owner still cannot say whether the money brought in a visitor who bought anything. The spend is real and the line to revenue is missing.

The category adds a second problem. Channels that work for most retailers are closed or restricted, so the owner pays for placements that are narrow, expensive or uncertain, and the report does not say which ones are working.

Dispensary Advertising Rules

The rules I work inside

Advertising rules for cannabis are set by the platforms and by the state, and they change. Google's cannabis content policy keeps most cannabis business ads off its platform. Meta prohibits ads that promote the sale of THC products, and it restricts CBD advertising in ways that vary by product. Those are platform rules, and I check them before any campaign is built.

Nevada's cannabis regulator sets its own advertising rules. The Cannabis Compliance Board's guidance covers advertising that appeals to children, and Nevada law lets cities and counties adopt stricter advertising rules than the state. Whether a given ad or page complies is a question for the owner's counsel, and I do not certify any of it.

Work I built, live where you can check it

Every build below is real and every link goes to the live work. Two of the five are full websites I built and still run. The other three are brand and content work, two of them for sites that are in build now, and each card says which.

Dispensary Customer Path

Most customers start with a search on a phone, often for a product type or a nearby store. They compare the menu, the hours and the reviews, then either visit or place an online order. The path is short, and the store that shows the right page at the right moment usually gets the visit.

Each step has a marketing job. The map listing and the store page answer the search, the menu page answers the product question, and the order or visit page answers the decision. Where a step is missing or unclear, the customer leaves for a competitor's listing.

GIOSTAR brand hub, a system I built

How a customer finds the store

Search on a phone

A nearby or product search, often from a parking lot, reaching the store's map listing first.

Menu and store page

The current products, hours and location, kept accurate across every listing the store controls.

Reviews and details

Reviews the store can ask for within platform rules, and clear answers to the questions a first visit raises.

Visit or order

A clear path to the store or an online order, with the step measured so the owner sees where visitors drop out.

Dispensary Marketing Services

What I run for a store

Dispensary marketing is mostly search, the store's own website and the channels that stay open to the category. Each card opens the service I run for that job, and the child pages show the trade-specific work.

  1. Step 01

    Dispensary SEO

The store's listings, menu pages and local search work, measured by visits and orders.

  2. Step 02

    Dispensary advertising

The channels that allow the category, set up under the rules and traced to store visits and orders.

  3. Step 03

    Local search services

Map listing and local search work for any store that serves a neighborhood.

  4. Step 04

    Google Business Profile

The profile that answers the first search, with hours, categories and photos kept accurate.

  5. Step 05

    Website design

A store website with a menu page that loads quickly on a phone and a clear path to visit or order.

Have You Worked With Cannabis Dispensaries

The closest work I can show

I have not run marketing for a licensed cannabis dispensary, so I do not claim a dispensary case in this trade. The closest work I have is my own WebVegas brand and the website I built for a Henderson regenerative medicine clinic, which is a medical practice and not a dispensary.

Neither is a cannabis result, and I will not present either one as one. The portfolio band above shows the five builds, and the reviews band shows what clients wrote.

A business owner reviewing work on a phone

Dispensary Marketing Reporting

A readout in the owner's numbers

The monthly readout shows the visits, orders and calls each channel produced, the spend against them and the changes I made under the rules. A dispensary owner should be able to see which channel is worth its cost without a call.

If a number cannot be tied to a visit, an order or a cost the store records, it does not go on the readout. That keeps the report useful when a platform's own numbers look better than the register.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.

Dispensary Marketing Process

How an engagement runs

Every engagement runs the same steps, and the scope and the rule set are written down before any spend starts.

  1. Step 01

    Read the rules first

I review the platform and state rules that apply to the store's channels before any campaign or page is planned.

  2. Step 02

Audit the store's listings and site

I check the map listing, the menu page, the site and the tracking, and send a written read before you pay.

  3. Step 03

Set the channels and the measures

Each channel is connected to a visit or an order the store can count.

  4. Step 04

    Run, test and cut

Channels that bring visits at an acceptable cost keep their budget, and the rest are cut or rebuilt under the rules.

  5. Step 05

    Report monthly

One page in the store's numbers, with the changes made and the next tests, that the owner can check against the register.

Dispensary Marketing Constraints

Limits that shape the plan

Certain channels are closed to the category, others carry age and audience rules, and some local jurisdictions add their own. The plan keeps the store inside those limits and spends where the rules allow.

These are marketing considerations and not legal advice. The store's counsel decides what is compliant, and I will not sign off on a claim, a creative or a placement as compliant.

A storefront street in the Valley
  • Platform rules that close most paid search and social channels to the category
  • State advertising rules that cover audience age and appeal
  • Local ordinances that can be stricter than state rules
  • Review requests that must stay within each platform's terms
  • Creative that cannot show product or promise an effect
