What Is a Fractional Executive

A senior seat, part time

A fractional executive is a senior leader who works for your company on a set number of days each month instead of full time. The seat carries real responsibility: one function, the decisions inside it, the plan and the people who carry it out. It does not carry a full-time salary, benefits and a hiring search that can run for months.

I hold that seat myself. I have built websites and run digital marketing for Las Vegas businesses for fourteen years, and the AI work I take on for service companies sits on the same base. I do not hand the seat to a junior team or a rotating set of consultants.

Consulting Firm Versus Fractional Executive

Advice versus a standing seat

A consulting firm sells a study. It arrives with a deck and a plan, and the team that wrote it is on its next client before the plan meets your staff. A fractional executive sits inside the decisions that come after the deck. That matters most in the months after approval, when someone has to choose, reverse a choice or say whether it worked.

Fractional Leadership for Small Business

Who this seat is for

Most owners who bring in a fractional executive run a practice or a service company with real revenue and a senior problem they cannot yet fill with a full-time hire.

WebVegas homepage, a website I built
  • A professional practice whose partners disagree about where to spend
  • A service company with several crews, offices or locations and no one owning the whole
  • A founder whose marketing, technology or AI work has grown past the hours they have
  • An owner who has had advice before and wants the decisions written down

Fractional Executive for Revenue and Marketing

Marketing and revenue seats

Two seats cover the work closest to sales. Both start with the numbers the business already keeps, so the first decisions rest on what happened rather than on a new report.

  1. Step 01

    Fractional marketing director

Direction for a marketing team that has tasks and no one setting the priorities, working alongside the staff already in place.

  2. Step 02

    Fractional CRO

Pipeline definitions, a forecast you can check and the one revenue review the owner reads each week.

Fractional Executive Responsibilities

What I own and what you own

The split is written on the first page of the scope, so nobody has to guess who makes a call. Ownership follows the work, and the accounts stay in your name from the first day.

An owner at work in a modern office
  • I own the plan, the decision log and the recommendations
  • I own the monthly readout, with every figure traced to its source
  • You own the final decision, the budget and the staff
  • You own every login, account and domain the work runs in

How a Fractional Executive Month Runs

The cadence I keep

The rhythm is the same on every seat. One call a week keeps decisions moving, the decision log gets an entry for every call, and a readout at month end shows what changed and what it produced.

  1. Step 01

    Weekly call

Thirty minutes on the open decisions, the blockers and the next choice. Each decision gets an owner and a date.

  2. Step 02

    Decision log

One shared document with the options considered, the choice made and the result, written in when it is known.

  3. Step 03

    Monthly readout

A written report against the plan: what shipped, what it produced and what I would change. Each line can be checked against your own numbers.

First Month With a Fractional Executive

The first thirty days on paper

The first month is reading, not recommending. I read the plan, the numbers, the accounts and the open decisions before I suggest a change, then write the first decision log with no more than three decisions that need an owner.

  1. Step 01

    Read what exists

The current plan, the reports, the accounts and the meeting notes, with each gap written down.

  2. Step 02

    Name the first decisions

Three decisions at most, each with an owner, a date and the result that will show it worked.

  3. Step 03

    Set the cadence

The weekly call and the monthly readout dates go on both calendars before the second month starts.

Five builds, and each card says what it was and whether it is live. GIOSTAR is the closest match to a senior seat: I joined the clinic a few months before it opened and built its website, marketing plan and AI strategy.

GIOSTAR: the clinic website, booking and lead tracking

I built and run giostarwellness.com for a regenerative medicine and wellness clinic in Henderson: every service page, online booking, financing and a blog. A website lead is tracked end to end, from the form to a booked consult to an active patient, with no manual steps. I also built its live brand hub, so every page, post and print piece pulls the same colours, type and rules.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.

When a Fractional Executive Is the Wrong Choice

When to hire full time instead

A fractional seat is the wrong choice when the work is daily and needs one person in the building every day, or when the decision is already made and only the doing is left. In both cases a full-time hire or a contractor for the doing is the better fit, and I will say so on the first call.

The clean way out is the same as the way in: a written handoff. I document the decision log, the plan and the open items, and your team keeps every account. A seat ends on the date in the scope, not in a surprise.

Fractional Executive Scope and Cost

What moves the scope

I quote a fixed price for a written scope after I have looked at the decisions you need to make. A seat for one function and a seat across three are different jobs, so a price list would be wrong for both. These are the factors that move the number.

A business owner reviewing work on a phone
  • How many functions the seat covers and how many decisions each one needs
  • How many days a month the seat must be in your business
  • Whether the plan already exists or I write it from the start
  • How many staff I direct and how many reports I read each month
  • Which systems the work touches, such as a CRM, booking or a data store

How a Fractional Executive Hands Off Work

Written handoffs, not hidden work

Every fractional engagement ends or changes hands at some point, and the handoff is where most of the value either holds or leaks. Before a seat closes, I write down the open decisions, the owner of each one and the reasons behind the calls already made. That document goes to the person taking over, so a new hire does not spend months rediscovering the reasoning.

The handoff note also lists what I would check first in the first month, the metrics that moved and the ones that did not. It is short on purpose, usually two pages, because a long handoff gets skimmed and the decisions get lost.
