Is the Magento store still worth keeping

As a Magento developer, I audit Magento stores for merchants myself, then patch, upgrade or move them. The hosting, code and every login stay in the owner's name.

Magento Development

A store whose upkeep outruns its sales

A merchant on Magento often has a story that sounds like this. The store was built years ago by an agency at real expense. It runs, orders arrive, and every few months a developer sends an invoice for a security patch, an extension update or a fix for a checkout that stopped working.

Nobody has set the invoices against the sales. The store keeps running because moving it feels risky and staying feels familiar. The owner cannot say whether the platform is still worth what it costs to hold up.

Freelance Magento 2 Developer

One person who reads the store and prices the choice

I am Justin Harris. I have worked in Las Vegas digital marketing for fourteen years and I do the work myself. I will be plain: no store in my portfolio runs on Magento, so I will not claim a Magento project. What I bring is a process you can check.

I read the store, write down the cost of keeping it and the cost of leaving, and give you a recommendation in writing. The hosting, the code repository, the domain and every login stay in your name.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we reached out to Justin for some AI consulting advice on where our service business could actually use automation. He was straightforward about what made sense and what didn't. Ended up being a useful conversation. Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.

What I do for Magento stores

Magento work falls into five jobs, and the first decides the rest.

What Is Magento Used For?

What Magento is for

Magento is an e-commerce platform. Merchants use it to run online stores with large catalogs, many product options, several storefronts or complicated pricing and shipping rules. It is flexible, which is its attraction and its cost.

Magento is not a CRM and it is not a general content system. It carries pages for the store, but a site that is mostly articles and service pages fits another platform better.

WebVegas homepage, a website I built

Is Magento Based on PHP?

What the language means for hiring

Yes. Magento is written in PHP, and Magento 2 sits on top of well-known open source parts. That means any competent PHP developer can read it, though the platform has its own conventions that take time to learn.

For an owner, the useful question is simpler. Can someone other than the original developer read this store and keep it running? I check that first.

An owner at work in a modern office

Is Magento Acquired by Adobe?

Adobe, Magento and Adobe Commerce

Yes. Adobe bought Magento in 2018. The paid product is now called Adobe Commerce, and the free open source edition is Magento Open Source. Magento 1 ended its support in 2020, so a store still on it is running on unsupported code.

Which edition you have changes the license, the upgrade path and the options. I identify it in the first hour of an audit.

Stay, upgrade or leave

I give a written recommendation after the audit. I never push a move if the store is sound.

Does Anyone Still Use Magento?

Who still runs Magento, and why

Yes. Many merchants with large catalogs and custom rules still run Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce. It is not the default for a new small store, because simpler platforms cost less to run.

A store that earns well and has a developer who knows it can stay. A store that is mostly a long list of patches may be better elsewhere.

What Does a Magento Developer Do?

What I check first

The first hour on a Magento store goes into a fixed list.

GIOSTAR homepage, a website I built
  • The Magento version and whether it still gets security patches
  • Every extension, its version and whether it is maintained
  • Admin users, including former staff who still have access
  • Backups, and whether anyone has tested a restore
  • The PHP version and the hosting plan behind the store
  • Page speed on category, product and checkout pages

How Long Does Magento Development Take?

How the work runs

Every Magento job runs five steps.

  1. Step 01

    Audit

A written read of the store with the risks ranked, before you pay anything.

  2. Step 02

    Decide

Stay, upgrade or leave, with the reasoning and a date on one page.

  3. Step 03

    Work on a copy

All changes are made on a copy you can open and click through.

  4. Step 04

    Switch with a restore point

The live store is switched once checkout passes my tests, with a way back.

  5. Step 05

    Report

A written record of what changed, who holds access and what comes next.

Magento Developer Cost

What moves the price

I quote a fixed price for a written scope after the audit. Hosting, extension licenses and any Adobe fees are billed to you directly. These factors move my side.

A storefront street in the Valley
  • The Magento version and how far it must move
  • The number of extensions that need replacing
  • Catalog size and the customer and order data to carry over
  • Custom code behind pricing, shipping or checkout
  • Hosting changes and server upgrades
  • Redirects needed to protect search history
