What Google Local Services Ads Are

How the badge and the lead fee work

Google Local Services Ads place a verified business at the top of Google results for a service, with a Google Guaranteed style badge and the phone number to call. In many service categories the advertiser pays for each lead, not each click, and the lead is a person who asked for a call, a quote or a booking through the ad.

That difference matters more than most owners expect. A click can cost a few dollars and never become a customer. A lead is closer to a phone call from a stranger who wants the service, which is why the question I ask first is whether each lead is worth the fee you pay for it.

Paying Per Lead

Why I start with the lead fee

Before I change a single setting, I read the lead history in the account with you. I look for leads that were in the wrong service, outside the service area, spam, or a duplicate of a call you already took. Those leads are the reason owners stop trusting the account, and they are the first thing I fix.

I set the weekly budget and the service area together, so the spend follows the calls you can actually take. If a category is over-busy for your team, the right move is a smaller budget, not a longer list of accepted leads.

Category Verification

The paperwork Google checks first

Local Services Ads do not start until Google has verified the business. The checks depend on the category and the state, but they usually ask for a business license, proof of insurance and a background check on the owner or on the people who answer calls. The name, address and phone number must match across every document and your Google Business Profile.

Most rejections I see come from a mismatch, not from a missing license. I collect the documents before the application, so the first submission has nothing to argue about.

  • Business license for the category and the city
  • Proof of liability insurance where the category requires it
  • Background checks on the owner and the people taking calls
  • Name, address and phone that match every document
  • A Google Business Profile in the same name

Lead Disputes

What to do with a bad lead

A lead can be wrong in ways that have nothing to do with you: a wrong service, a caller outside your area, or a robocall that was logged as a lead. Google lets you dispute some of these inside the account. I check the dispute window and the reason codes in your account before I tell you a lead qualifies, because the rules and the time limits change.

I keep a short log of each dispute, the lead, the reason and the answer. That log is the record you will want if a charge is ever questioned.

Setting Up Local Service Ads

How the first month runs

1. Check the paperwork

I confirm the license, insurance and background requirements for your category before anything is submitted. You get a written list of what is missing, if anything, before the application goes in.

2. Set the service area

I choose the cities and ZIP codes you can serve on a normal day, so the calls match your crew and your hours.

3. Choose the services

Each service in the category has its own lead stream. I enable only the services you actually sell, so a request for work you do not offer never reaches the phone.

4. Watch the first leads

For the first two weeks I read every lead and dispute the ones that do not qualify. You get a short weekly note on what came in and what changed.

Google Local Services Ads Company Las Vegas

One person runs the account

I have built websites and run digital marketing for Las Vegas businesses for fourteen years, and I still do the account work myself. The person who sets up the verification is the person who reads the leads and answers your questions about them.

The account is created in your name, the login is yours, and you can add a manager of your choice. If you leave, the account and its history stay with you.

Google Ads Versus Local Services Ads

Two accounts with two jobs

Local Services Ads and standard Google Ads both show on Google, but they are different products. Standard search ads bid on keywords and charge per click. Local Services Ads are booked around a category, a verified business and a lead.

Most service businesses need both over time. I start with the one that matches how you get paid today, and I say plainly when a standard search campaign would do the job better.

Tracking Local Service Leads

Track each lead to the call

A lead in the Google account is only a starting point. What matters is whether it became a booked job. I set up the phone and form tracking so each call can be matched to the lead it came from, the same way I track website leads on the sites I build.

The closest work I have is a lead pipeline I built for my own prospecting, which scores each lead and drafts the first message. It is not a Local Services Ads account, and I do not present it as one. It shows the scoring habit I bring to every lead source.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.

Google Local Services Ads Costs

What moves the spend

The fee per lead depends on the category, the city and how many services you enable. Competition for calls changes week to week, so I do not give a number before I have read your category and your lead history.

I quote a fixed price for a written scope after a free look at the account, so you know the full cost before you commit.

Local Services Ads Lead Checks

What I check on every lead

I look at the service named in the lead, the caller's area, whether the lead was a real request, and whether the contact was a duplicate. A lead that fails one of those checks is logged and disputed when the account allows it.

A lead that passes is a call your team should return the same day. I say which leads I think will book and which ones are only curious, so the first call on your side is not wasted.
