Performance Max Campaigns

Automated Ads You Can Read

Performance Max campaigns run one budget across Google's channels, and I set them up so the spend stays readable. You get asset groups you can name, exclusions you can check and search terms you can review.

What Performance Max Is

One campaign across Google's channels

Performance Max is a campaign type that serves ads across Google Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single budget and a single goal. You give it creative assets, a list of conversions to chase and, optionally, a list of audience signals. Google decides where and when each ad runs.

That reach is the reason owners like it. It is also the reason a Performance Max account can become hard to read if nobody sets it up with care.

Why Performance Max Feels Like a Black Box

Where the reporting goes quiet

Most owners who call me have a Performance Max campaign that spends every month and reports a single line of conversions. They cannot see which channel took the money, which search terms brought the calls, or whether the same customer was counted twice.

The fix is not to switch the campaign off. It is to set the conversion goals, the exclusions and the asset groups so the reporting says something a person can act on.

Asset Groups I Build

Themes you can name and check

An asset group is one theme inside the campaign: a service, a neighborhood or an offer, with its own headlines, images and video. I build a small number of asset groups with names that match how you sell, so the report reads like your business and not like a list of ad IDs.

Each group gets its own final URL, so a visit lands on the page that matches the ad. If a page is missing, I say so before the campaign goes live.

Audience Signals

Hints that guide the first weeks

An audience signal tells Performance Max who to start with: past customers, website visitors or people who searched for your services. It is a starting hint, not a fence. Google can still show the ads to people outside the list.

I use customer lists only where you have the right to use them, and I say which list each signal came from, so the report can be checked against it later.

Exclusions and Brand Terms

Stopping spend on the wrong traffic

Exclusions decide where the campaign must not run. I add negative keywords, placement exclusions and brand exclusions when they are needed, and I review them each week. Without them a Performance Max campaign can pay for clicks from people who were never going to hire you.

Brand terms are a common gap. If people already search for your business by name, I decide whether the campaign should bid on those searches, because the answer changes what the report claims.

Search Term Insight

What people typed before the click

The search terms report shows the words people typed before they clicked. It is the most useful page in a Performance Max account, and it is the page most owners never see. I download it, sort it by cost and by conversion, and send you the terms that should be added as exclusions.

This is also where a wrong service or a wrong city shows up first. A short review each week keeps the spend pointed at the work you actually take.

Conversion Goals I Set First

Define the win before the budget

A Performance Max campaign learns from the conversions you give it. A form fill, a tap to call and a booked appointment are different events, and counting all of them as the same win misleads the bidding. I set a primary conversion and mark the rest as secondary before the campaign spends.

If call tracking or form tracking is not set up on your site, I fix that first. Without it the campaign has nothing honest to learn from.

When Performance Max Fits

A business that has a clear conversion

A clear conversion

A booked call, a quote form or a purchase that you can count. Without one, the campaign has nothing to optimize toward.

Creative you already own

Photos, video and headlines that fit the services you sell. Performance Max needs material to test, and thin material makes thin ads.

Enough volume to learn

Enough conversions for the campaign to learn from. Low volume usually means a narrower search campaign works better.

When It Does Not

Cases where I would not use it

If you need to know exactly which keyword produced each call, a standard search campaign gives you that view and Performance Max does not. If the only goal is brand awareness, a video or display plan is a better tool. I say so in writing before a budget goes into the account.

I would also hold off if the website is slow or the forms do not deliver. An automated campaign sends more people to a broken page, and it does it faster.

Performance Max Agency Work

One person in the account

I have built websites and run digital marketing for Las Vegas businesses for fourteen years, and I still do the account work myself. The person who sets the goals is the person who reads the search terms each week.

The account is created in your name, the login is yours and you can keep it if you part ways with me. You never depend on me to see your own numbers.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we reached out to Justin for some AI consulting advice on where our service business could actually use automation. He was straightforward about what made sense and what didn't. Ended up being a useful conversation. Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.
