How Community Ads Work

Ads placed inside a community

Reddit ads appear in the feed and in some conversation pages, and they can be aimed at communities, interests and keywords. Readers arrive already talking about a subject, which is why the placement can feel more useful than a banner, and why it can also feel out of place.

The platform is a self-serve ad tool with a community focus. The ad is a post with a headline, a link and an image or short video, and the reader can comment, vote or ignore it. That public response is part of the test, not a side effect.

Why Community Fit Comes First

Fit before budget

A community has its own rules, its own jokes and its own opinion of advertising. An ad that a local trade group would applaud can get mocked in a city forum within an hour. The first job is to find the communities where your service is discussed and where a helpful post would be welcome.

I read the recent posts in each community before I choose it. I look for complaints about the service you sell, questions people ask and the tone of replies to promotions. Communities that ban ads or punish self-promotion are dropped from the plan before any spend.

Subreddit Mapping for Las Vegas

Local communities and broader ones

Some communities are local to the Valley and talk about neighborhoods, traffic, schools and services. Others are broader, about a trade, a hobby or a professional field. A local service may need both, but the copy for each has to differ, because the readers differ.

I build a short map: the community, why it fits, the rules I found and the kind of ad it can carry. That map is shared with you before the campaign starts, so you can see why each community is in or out.

Tone for Skeptical Readers

Plain copy that does not sell too hard

Community readers can smell a sales script. Copy that opens with a hard promise, a countdown or a discount is usually ignored or reported. Copy that names the problem in plain words, says who the service is for and gives one clear next step does better.

I write three versions of each ad and read them aloud before they go live. If a line would look strange in a real thread, it is cut. No copy claims a result, because a claim with no proof is the fastest way to lose a skeptical reader.

Targeting Options Explained

What the settings do

Community targeting

Shows the ad to readers in chosen communities. The most precise option, and the one that needs the most care about fit.

Interest targeting

Reaches readers who engage with topics like the service. Broader, so the copy and the exclusions do more of the work.

Keyword targeting

Matches ads to posts that discuss a term. Useful for questions people already ask, and risky if the term has a second meaning.

Location targeting

Limits the ad to a city or region when the platform offers it. The setting that keeps a Valley test from reaching far-off readers.

Creative That Holds Up

Images and text that read as honest

A community ad works best when it looks like a helpful post. A plain photo of the work, a short line of text and a link to a page that answers the question in the post tend to hold up. Stock imagery and heavy logos often read as an ad and get scrolled past.

I test one visual change at a time. A new photo of the team, a different opening line or a shorter headline gives a clear read. Changing all three at once tells you nothing about which change mattered.

Measuring Conversions

Counting the action, not the upvote

Votes and comments are signals, but they are not business results. A post with many upvotes can bring no calls, and a quiet post can bring a booking from a reader who never comments. I set the goal to a call, a form or a booked consult and treat votes as context.

The landing page, the phone tracking and the form tracking are set up before the first post goes live. The report then shows which community and which ad produced each action, so a poor community can be cut without guessing.

Brand Safety and Replies

Handling comments on the ad

Comments on a community ad are public, and some of them will be unfriendly. A short, honest reply from the business is usually better than silence, and I write a reply plan before launch so no one is improvising under pressure.

If a comment contains a fact that is wrong, I correct it once, plainly and with a link to the page. If a comment is abuse, I report it and hide it. I do not argue with a reader in the thread.

When Community Ads Fit

A service people already discuss

  1. Step 01

    A service people discuss

Questions and complaints about the service already appear in the communities. The ad can answer one of them directly.

  2. Step 02

A page that answers the question

The link opens a page that explains the service, the area and the next step in plain words.

  3. Step 03

    A team that answers quickly

Replies to the ad and to leads come back the same day. A slow reply in a public thread costs more than the ad.

When They Do Not Fit

When I would skip the platform

If no active community discusses your service, the audience is too small to learn from, and a search or local listing will reach the same people more directly. If your category is tightly regulated, the copy review takes longer, and the test may not be worth the time.

I would also hold off if the page is slow or the forms do not deliver. A community reader who clicks through to a broken form becomes a public complaint, which is harder to undo than a lost click.

I also check the community rules again the week before launch, because moderators change them without notice, and a community that allowed promotion in spring may not allow it in November.

What a Community Test Costs

What moves the spend

The cost depends on the communities, the targeting, the competition for the placement and the action you choose to pay for. Community ads are not priced like search, so I do not compare them with a search number before I have read the market.

I quote a fixed price for a written scope after a free look at the communities and the page, so you know the full cost before you commit.

How the Test Runs

Steps from the map to the review

Each test starts with a written map and ends with a decision. Nothing runs in a community that you have not approved, and every step is written down before the next one begins, so you can follow the test without reading the platform.

  1. Step 01

    Map the communities

I list the communities, the rules I found and the fit for each one. You approve the list before anything runs.

  2. Step 02

    Write and read the copy

Three versions per community, read aloud and cut where they sound like a pitch. You see every version before it goes live.

  3. Step 03

    Launch with tracking

The page, the phone and the form are tracked, and each action is linked to the community that produced it.

  4. Step 04

    Review each week

A short note shows the spend, the comments, the actions and the change made. Weak communities are dropped.

Working With One Consultant

The person who reads the threads

I have built websites and run digital marketing for Las Vegas businesses for fourteen years, and I still do the account work myself. The person who maps the communities is the person who reads the replies and writes the weekly note.

The ad account and the logins are in your name. If you stop working with me, the community map, the copy and the history stay with you.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.
