Is Graphic Design Worth Hiring For

Where the inconsistent work comes from

Most owners do not hire a designer for a single piece. They hire one because the pieces stopped matching. The logo arrived as one flattened file, the menu was made in a template, the deck was built by someone on the sales team, and the social posts changed color with every person who touched them.

The usual cause is that each piece was made by a different person with no shared rules. Each one looked fine on its own, and together they made the business look like three companies. The owner pays for each design and never gets the set that makes the brand easy to recognize.

Before any design starts, I write down where the work will appear and who will see it first: the storefront, the menu, the pitch, the box, the phone. The brief follows from that list, and the rules are built to cover every surface on it.

One designer for every surface

I design the mark, the colors, the type and the rules first, then apply them to each surface you need. The work runs from a logo through a menu, a brochure, a presentation and a package, and every piece is built from the same files so nothing drifts.

I do the design myself. There is no hand-off to a junior team, no account manager between you and the work, and no template dropped in with your name on it. The person who draws the mark is the person who checks the menu against it and the person who answers the question about it later.

Who I design for

Most of the owners I design for run professional practices, restaurants, med spas, home-services companies with several crews and event venues. They have a face to the public and printed or on-screen pieces that have to look like the same company.

A business with one van, no printed material and no plan to grow the brand may not need a full identity. I say so on the first call and scope the smallest piece that does the job, such as a logo file and a short usage sheet.

Identity work I built, live where you can check it

Mili Pharma and Desert Inn Oasis are brand work I designed, and each card says whether the site is built yet. GIOSTAR carries a live brand hub I built, so every page and print piece pulls the same colors, type and rules.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we ended up working with Justin for some AI consulting on how to structure our operations. He laid out a clear plan, didn't overcomplicate it, and we've been running smoother since. Good fit for a service business. He knows Las Vegas and he knows this stuff.

Justin joined our team a few months before opening to replace a marketing agency that wasn’t performing. He stepped up fast. Within weeks he launched a fully redesigned website with new brand guidelines, built and delivered our marketing plan and AI strategy, and helped implement our system architecture so we could open on time. Since then, he’s made several critical enhancements to the site that helped us generate revenue in our first month. His engagement was supposed to end at opening, but he became such an integral part of our leadership team that we kept him on to help evolve our marketing and tech strategy as we grow. He’s easy to work with, pushes back when it matters, and moves easily between strategy, delivery, and operations depending on what’s needed. If you’re looking for a deeply experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated marketing, AI, or technology consultant, I highly recommend Justin Harris AI Consulting.

After going back and forth on whether to bring in outside help, we reached out to Justin for some AI consulting advice on where our service business could actually use automation. He was straightforward about what made sense and what didn't. Ended up being a useful conversation. Knew Justin before he started building AI systems for businesses, and watching what he's put together is genuinely impressive. He built out an AI automation setup for my website in Las Vegas and it changed how we handle leads completely. The guy actually runs this stuff himself, so he knows what works.

Brand Consistency Across Applications

One set of rules for every piece

A brand holds together when the rules are written down and applied the same way everywhere. On the Mili Pharma identity I drew a single-line butterfly mark with micro and reverse versions and the horizontal and vertical lockups the site is being built on. Every version comes from the same master, so the small mark on a label matches the large one on a wall.

On the GIOSTAR brand hub, every page, post and print piece pulls the same colors, type and rules from one live source. When a color changes, the change reaches every surface at once, which is the difference between a brand guide sitting in a folder and one that people actually follow.

On Desert Inn Oasis I redrew the lockup as clean vector letterforms, so the palm and the serif lettering hold their shape at every size from a sign to a stamp.

GIOSTAR homepage, a website I built

How a Design Project Runs

Brief, one board, pick, refine, handoff

  1. Step 01

    Write the brief

List every surface the design must cover, the audience for each one and the words the brand should own.

  2. Step 02

    Review one board

I show the options on one sheet, so the comparison is made on the whole set and not one file at a time.

  3. Step 03

    Pick and refine

One direction is chosen and refined in written rounds, with each change recorded against the brief.

  4. Step 04

    Apply to every surface

The chosen direction is applied to each piece on the list, checked at print size and at phone size.

  5. Step 05

    Hand over the files

Source files, export files, the usage sheet and the rules go to you, and the handoff is written down.

Graphic Design Cost

What moves the price

Graphic design pricing comes down to a fixed price for a written scope, quoted after I see the list of surfaces and the brand you already have. A logo and a usage sheet is a different job from a full identity, a menu system and a deck, so a price list would be wrong for both.

These are the things that move the price, so you can judge any quote this way, mine included.

  • Whether the brand is new or the existing rules need to be rebuilt

  • Photography or illustration that has to be sourced or produced

Who Owns the Design Files

The files belong to you

Ownership is stated in the scope. Every final file, the editable source and the export versions are delivered to your business, and the usage rights for fonts, photos and illustrations are checked against the license before anything is printed.

If you stop working with me, the files stay with you. A logo that lives only in one designer's account is a logo the business does not really own, and I will not build that way.

A full file set, handed over

Each handoff follows the same list, so you know what you have and where it lives.

  • Font and photo license records for everything used in the pieces
  • A short note on what to change first when the brand grows

Design Revisions and Scope

Rounds are written down

Revisions are where a design budget disappears without anyone noticing. The scope sets how many rounds are included, what counts as a round and what happens to a change request that falls outside it. Each round is logged against the brief, so the team can see what was asked and what was done.

A change to the brief, such as a new surface or a new product, goes into the scope first, with its own price and date. Nothing gets added quietly, and nothing gets lost in a thread.

Design is one part of the work. These are the other pages I offer, each with its own scope.

Brand Strategy Before Design

Decide the message before the look

A logo answers the question of what the business looks like. Strategy answers what it should be known for, and that has to come first or the design has nothing to prove. The strategy is short: the audience, the one promise, the words to use and the words to avoid, and the proof a buyer can check.

I write that strategy with the owner in a single working session, then test the first design against it. If a color or a shape does not support the promise, it changes before it reaches a printer. The result is a design that makes a claim the business can keep.

A storefront street in the Valley

Print and Packaging Work

Pieces that touch the customer

Print pieces and packages are the brand in the customer's hands. A brochure, a sell sheet, a box or a label is handled, kept and compared with the others on a shelf. Each one has to hold its color, its type size and its layout when it is printed, folded or cut, so the file is built for the press from the start.

I prepare print files with the right color mode, bleed, safe margins and resolution for the printer you choose. Packaging adds dielines, which are the flat cut-and-fold shapes, and I check them against the product size before a proof is ordered. A proof is a physical sample you can hold, and I ask for one before any run.

WebVegas homepage, a website I built

Menus and Printed Sales Pieces

Menus that change without a redesign

A restaurant or a cafe menu changes every season, and a menu that was built as a one-off becomes expensive to edit. I build menus on a grid with set places for the section names, the prices, the descriptions and the seasonal notes, so the next edit is a text change and not a new layout.

The same grid carries sell sheets, event flyers and table cards, so the printed pieces in a venue look like they come from one place. Each piece is checked at its printed size, since a type size that reads well on a screen can be too small on a card.

An owner at work in a modern office

Social Media Graphics and Templates

Posts that keep the same look

Social graphics are where a brand drifts fastest, because each post gets made in a hurry by someone new. A template set solves that. It holds the logo position, the type, the color blocks and the photo treatment, so a team member can change the words and the picture and still produce a post that looks like the brand.

I build the templates for each platform size the business uses, check the text against the safe area that each platform crops, and write a short usage note with the rules a team member can follow without asking me.

GIOSTAR brand hub, a system I built

Brand Consistency Checks

How I catch drift early

Drift is the gradual change that happens when people make their own versions of the brand. I catch it by comparing every new piece against the usage sheet before it is approved, and by keeping the master files in one place where the team can find them.

Each month, if the business wants it, I review a sample of what went out and note the places where the rules were bent. That note is short, specific and kept with the brand files, so the next person knows what to fix.
